You Can Bet That, Never Gotta Sweat That! Is Love A "Sure Thing"?

Love you like a brother
Treat you like a friend
Respect you like a lover
You could bet that
Never gotta sweat that

I got faith in you and I
So put your pretty little hand in mine
Even when we're down to the wire babe
Even when it's do or die
We can do it baby simple and plain
This love is a sure thing

Awwww well isn't that sweet?! Sounds good doesn't it? I'd wager that most women would just melt if their man uttered these words to them. We may be complex creatures but it's usually the simple things that get us where it counts. Sounds simple enough right? But when is it ever? People say that love is always supposed to feel good. I beg to differ. When you first fall in love, all of the things you see on TV and read in books often hold true: the buttterflies, the nervousness, the goofy smiling, the sweet gestures. Those are the things that occur when we're falling in love with a person. But being in love, and sustaining a relationship are two different things. A sustainable relationship takes hard work, and hard work isn't always pretty. With this in mind, when the going gets tough...is love a sure thing?

I would argue that love, real love, is a sure thing. Even if things don't work out the way we expect them to or hope they will, love still holds true. Love doesn't just die when a relationship has run its course. It just lies dormant because it has no further place to go. Love songs, romance novels, and TV make us ooh and ahh all day, but what happens on the radio and on screen (or on paper) isn't a direct reflection of what happens in real life.

Sure everyone should respect, cherish, and love their respective mates. Yet, I've heard from a few married couples that when the going get rough (and it will undoubtedly get rough), love is the first thing to go. Now don't get me wrong, I love this song just as much as the next person. I'd also consider myself an optimist. Even still, I find myself asking: which love is a sure thing? Contrary to what Mr. Miguel croons, it aint always "simple and plain". Sometimes differences can cause a real strain amongst even the best lovers. When it all comes down to it, the willingness to put in hard work and compromise should be the "sure thing". Obviously, it's not as romantic and wouldn't make for such a great tune, but all in all if you want a relationship to go the distance, communication, tolerance, and growth should be the sure things. With those attributes, he should handily be able to "love you like a brother, treat you like a friend, respect you like a lover". Woe-ooo-woe-woe-ooo-woe..........

They Say Imitation is The Best Form of Flattery; I Say Eff That!

I've been grappling with my decision to talk about something that's been bothering me for about a week now.  After my internal debate was done, I concluded: This is MY blog and I can talk about anything I damn well please! So...I had an issue that I wanted to know if ya'll can help me with.  Usually comments are not that important to me because I can see people are reading according my stats, and that's what really matters to me (btw, thanks for reading).  On this particular post, I plead with you to weigh in, because I actually care what you all think AND I also want to know if I'M buggin! The Kyla Chronicles: Showtime At The Edge

I'd just gotten off from work and couldn't wait to get home. I was pushing my X5 down the FDR like it was Kit from Nightrider, Beyonce's "Party" blaring in the background. I had so much to do as Tristan was coming home from a two month tour with Jill Scott. I needed to get to BK. And quick. I had a lot to do and was pressed for time .I wanted everything to be just right for our reunion. I missed him so much it hurt and seeing him was the only remedy. I'd constantly wondered if he'd missed me as much, since we hadn't spoken as frequently as we normally had when he was on tour. Tristan was a backup singer and he toured with different artists. This month, it was Jill Scott. Next month was anyone's guess. He was good - actually he was great - and therefore steadily booking gigs. He had dreams of becoming the headliner, but he figured the background was at least a step in the right direction. At first it was intriguing and kinda sexy to be dating ...

One Monkey Don't Stop No Show...In This Case: One Job.

My oh my, has it been an interesting few days. Many changes have been brewing for some time now but I got a push like no other last Friday. I went in to work. Just like I would on any other routine Friday. Happy for the weekend and just willing myself to get through the last day of a tedious week. About noon, my boss calls me into his office. Prompts me to shut the door. I comply. He motions for me to have a seat. Again, I comply. He then says: "Onedia, I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to let you go." Read More...
